What is AI?

I have met many people in recent weeks who testify to their ignorance of what AI de facto is. That’s why I asked Chat GPT to put together a quick description so we all mean the same thing when we talk about AI. For those of you who want to gain deeper knowledge, my chapter on AI is freely available online or for download here.

Here is a clear, faithful English translation, keeping the same structure and intent.

What is AI?

AI (Artificial Intelligence) is an umbrella term for systems that perform tasks that normally require human intelligence: recognizing patterns, making decisions, understanding language, or learning from data.

AI is not one thing, but a family of technologies.

1. ML – Machine Learning

The foundation of almost all modern AI

What it is: Systems that learn patterns from data instead of being programmed with fixed rules.

Examples:

  • spam filters
  • image recognition
  • recommendation systems

Characteristics:

  • trained on historical data
  • make predictions
  • no language, no reasoning

➡️ ML = statistical pattern learning

2. DL – Deep Learning

A subset of Machine Learning

What it is: Machine Learning using deep neural networks (many layers).

Examples:

  • facial recognition
  • speech recognition
  • self-driving cars (partially)

Characteristics:

  • requires large amounts of data and compute
  • finds complex patterns
  • still task-specific

➡️ DL = more powerful pattern recognition

3. LLM – Large Language Models

Language AI (like ChatGPT)

What it is: A type of deep learning model trained on massive amounts of text to predict the next token (piece of text).

Examples:

  • ChatGPT
  • Claude
  • Gemini

Characteristics:

  • understands and generates text
  • can reason linguistically
  • has no understanding in a human sense
  • no will, no goals

➡️ LLM = statistical language model

4. AI Agents

LLM + action

What it is: When an LLM is connected to:

  • memory
  • tools
  • APIs
  • systems

…it can act, not just respond.

Examples:

  • scheduling meetings
  • analyzing data
  • running code
  • collaborating in systems (e.g., Moltbot)

➡️ Agent = LLM + architecture

5. AGI – Artificial General Intelligence

Often discussed – but does not exist

What it is (in theory):

  • general intelligence
  • can learn anything
  • has its own goals
  • understands the world broadly

Status: ❌ Does not exist today ❌ LLMs are not AGI

➡️ AGI = hypothetical future AI

Common denominators

All AI systems today:

  • are based on statistics and mathematics
  • lack:
  • operate through:

One sentence summary

AI today is advanced statistics that, when combined with language and systems, can feel intelligent—without being intelligent in the human sense.
