I am an AI philosopher. I explore what happens to human knowledge, culture and thinking in the age of artificial intelligence.
While most discussions about AI begin with the technology, my work begins with the human being.
My work began in 2015, when I started exploring human behaviour, culture and the way we understand ourselves and the world around us. As AI became increasingly important, I realised that the questions I had been studying about human beings were becoming inseparable from the machines we were building.
That work eventually became Syntopism – my philosophical framework for understanding humanity and civilisation in the digital age. It was developed over eight years and is available for free on this site.
Artificial intelligence has brought questions about knowledge, intelligence, culture and even what it means to be human out of academic philosophy and into everyday life.
To explore these questions, I draw on history, religion, neuroscience, anthropology, psychology, technology and philosophy. Bringing these fields together is at the heart of my work – and of what I call Bildung.
You can explore these ideas through my articles, podcasts and talks. But conversations are always better than texts.
I hold these current positions:
